BICENTENARY OF DEATHS OF CAPTAIN ARTHUR PHILLIP AND LIEUTENANT MATTHEW FLINDERS

This year, 2014, will see the bicentenary of the deaths of two of the most extraordinary men in Australian history: Captain Arthur Phillip, the first Governor of New South Wales and the founder of our modern nation, and Lieutenant Matthew Flinders, the man who charted the entire coastline of the continent upon which he, for the first time, bestowed the name “Australia”.

RELIGIOUS AND ETHNIC PERSECUTION IN IRAQ

Tonight I speak on the persecution of minorities in northern Iraq. I was pleased that the United Nations Security Council, representing the five leading nations of the world, the United States of America, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom, as well as a number of smaller nations including Australia, has denounced the persecution of minority groups in northern Iraq.

I will also speak tonight about the commemoration of the tragic holocaust in which six million Jews were murdered by the evil regime led by Adolf Hitler. This tragic event was commemorated this night at St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral.
